Salt Lake City sits just 35 miles from Park City, making it accessible for day trips that complement your mountain visit. Utah's capital offers cultural institutions, dining diversity, and urban experiences that differ from Park City's resort character. The proximity creates easy opportunities for expanded exploration and adventure.

Getting There

The drive through Parley's Canyon takes approximately 35 to 45 minutes under normal conditions. Winter weather can extend this significantly—check conditions before departing during snow storms.

Park City Transit connects to UTA bus service for those preferring not to drive, though a vehicle provides more flexibility for exploring the city.

What to consider: Rush hour traffic (roughly 7-9 AM and 4-6 PM) affects canyon travel times—plan departures accordingly.

Local Insight: Salt Lake's lower elevation means warmer spring conditions when Park City is still muddy. The lower elevation also means altitude sickness is rare in the valley. The city's ethnic restaurant scene offers cuisines you won't find in Park City.

Cultural Attractions

Natural History Museum of Utah: Situated in the foothills above the city, this architecturally striking museum presents Utah's geological and biological heritage through engaging exhibits. With Utah being home to many impressive archeological finds, the dinosaur exhibitions are particularly impressive.

Utah Museum of Fine Arts: Located on the University of Utah campus, the collection spans global art history with particular strength in regional works. The displays are grouped by time period, culture and geography, making the entire collection easy to navigate and explore.

Clark Planetarium: Situated within the Gateway Mall in the downtown area of SLC, this state-of-the-art venue-of-the-art venue features 3-D IMAX films, laser light shows & exhibits about space & science. The interactive attractions make the Clark Planetarium perfect for families with young children.

Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum: Also, located at Gateway Mall, this interactive, hands-on children’s museum provides imaginative play stations, special events, and unique programs. Although it’s open to “kids of all ages,” pre-school and elementary age children will enjoy this the best.

Temple Square: The historic center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints welcomes visitors with guided tours, historic buildings, and notable architecture. The five block area can be navigated on your own, but guided tours are available as well.

Dining and Neighborhoods

Salt Lake City's dining scene has expanded substantially in recent years. The downtown area, 9th and 9th neighborhood, and Sugar House district each offer distinctive restaurant concentrations worth exploring.

What to look for: Cuisines less represented in Park City's resort-focused dining—ethnic restaurants, in particular, provide variety.

Outdoor Access

The Wasatch Front provides additional hiking and skiing access beyond Park City's offerings. Some popular hiking/walking trails include the  City Creek to Dry Creek Trail, Ensign Peak, and Millcreek Canyon. Big Cottonwood Canyon and Little Cottonwood Canyon host additional ski resorts and summer trailheads.
