Product quality has steadily deteriorated over the past two decades. Durability and wear life has decreased significantly and keeps decreasing. Size (small, medium, large) standards for clothing; climbing harnesses, etc. are inconsistent and unreliable as well. I recommend any of the numerous premium outdoor clothing and gear manufacturers over Black Diamond.
I’ve had a set of BD adjustable ski poles for 10+ years and have still yet to break them even through several bad crashes over that time. This summer I picked up a second pair and broke the bottom portion this weekend in an awkward fall. Went over to the store today and was able to pick up a new bottom portion to fix my pole. Staff was helpful and friendly. As long as BD keeps selling the bottom part and I can pick it up at the store these will be the only poles that I will use.
Now I see an automated "response from the owner" to my review that was not too good about Black Diamond's customer service and support. Then, I wonder 'who is Black Diamond, now?'. Poor service of late, curious shifts in product focus and management, etc. I didn't realize they became part of a Corporate Holding Company in 2010. It's taken a while, but that management style eventually takes over. A decade and a half to hold off is pretty good - now we see the 'corporate slide'.
My Black Diamond Viper ice axe broke while I was leading a mixed route, putting me in a seriously dangerous situation. I contacted BD customer service not to request a replacement (the tools are 10 years old and out of warranty), but to report a safety-critical failure and ask if I should retire the other axe. Instead, I received a dismissive response and a lecture about aluminum stress. This is unacceptable for a life-critical tool. I will never buy Black Diamond again and strongly advise caution to anyone considering their gear.
Visiting and shopping at BD’s Retail Store. Topping up with a BD Tour around the Headquarters - watching how products are made, a sneak peak of their new collections and meeting the team behind BD! What an amazing day!
