Wild Heart Sanctuary is a truly exceptional place, led by Sonya Richins, who stands out as a leading expert, advocate, and voice in the effort to protect and preserve wild horses. Her depth of knowledge is matched by a genuine commitment to the well-being of every animal in her care. She has created something remarkable with Wild Heart Sanctuary—a beautiful, peaceful environment where rescued horses are not only safe, but able to return to a more natural, “wild” way of living. The herd is given space to heal, to connect, and to simply be what they are, which is rare and incredibly powerful to witness. What makes this sanctuary even more special is its impact beyond the horses themselves. Sonya gives generously to the community, creating opportunities for people to connect with the land and the animals in a meaningful, grounding way. There’s something deeply restorative about being there. As a volunteer, it’s hard to say who benefits more—I came to help, but often feel like I’m the one receiving the greater gift. The experience is both humbling and transformative. Wild Heart Sanctuary is not just a refuge for horses—it’s a place of healing, connection, and purpose.

Sonya and her sanctuary are absolutely touching. Hearing her story about how she got started and each horse's story was incredible. I wished I lived close enough to volunteer.
