I had a deeply frustrating experience with Ernie at SLC Bootworks, which resulted in permanent damage to my boots and severe, ongoing foot pain. I initially went in because I was experiencing heel lift and shin pain in my ski boots. Importantly, I had zero heel pain at the time. On the first visit, Ernie punched 2 places on each boot and charged me around $300. Unfortunately, it didn't resolve the heel lift, nor shin pain. I went back for a second visit, and his attitude was incredibly dismissive. He didn't want to listen to my feedback. Instead, he just took the boots, quickly ground a hole into the heel pocket, and charged me another $50. When I politely asked him to confirm my understanding of the problem with the boots and his reasoning for this specific modification, he arrogantly told me that I 'didn't need to know,' and that I should 'forget about feeling' and 'stop researching' boot issues. The result was a disaster. After a week of skiing, the boots were drastically looser, especially in the heel. Because the fit was compromised, my performance in technical carving and moguls noticeably dropped. Worse, that ground-out and looser heel pocket caused severe heel pain that I never had before, and it now flares up every single time I ski. Upset, I went back a third time. He rudely told me to just go back to Tahoe where I originally bought them, and he would refund all my money and 'revert' the modifications. Actually he only refunded about $250. Furthermore, you cannot magically revert plastic that has been ground away—the hole in the heel pocket is permanently there. I admit I regret not just investing in Zipfit liners from the start like other fitters suggested; that was my choice. While Ernie might be an experienced and knowledgeable fitter, his arrogance ruined my gear and got me severely heel pain. A professional should carefully assess sizing, actually listen to the customer, and align with customer before making irreversible changes. I have to purchase a new pair of boots, besides that, I also need to see doctor in case of permanent issues to my heel like Haglund.
Bob was wonderful! Great guy with tons of experience. I have never felt such comfortable boots and cannot wait to hit the slopes. Also, thankful for him squeezing my friend in to get some boots too! ありがとうございました!
If you want the best boot fit on the face of the planet, go see Ernie, Jamie, and the crew at Bootworks. I’ve spent 50 years skiing and have worked every side of the business, from racing to working in a ski shop as a former bootfitter and former ski rep to freestyle coaching. This team is in a league of their own. Their understanding of foot posture and modern tech is unmatched. They helped me get perfectly neutral on my skis again after my knee replacements, which has been a total game-changer for my balance. They are elite professionals and true masters of their craft. I can’t thank them enough. Highly recommended.
I had a very good experience purchasing new ski boots with custom insoles and custom fitting from Bootworks. My technician was Bob, and he was very knowledgeable and patient. I love my new boots and they feel great. Bob set them up for me and I skied well in them. My feet were toasty, which was a switch from always having cold toes in my prior boots. He took a laser measurement of my knee alignment and it was 100% right. No additional changes were needed. When I had a quick question a few days later about how to tighten one boot that had too much play in the heel, a young Bootworks tech helped me out. Highly recommend.
I cannot stress how great an experience getting a boot fitting with the people at Bootworks was. I have wide feet and large calves and getting a good overall comfortable fit has always been difficult. I scheduled an appointment and was provided great personalized service. They took the time to do proper measurements and recommend boots that would not just fit the best, but be best suited for both comfort and performance that would match my abilities. They were holding with all costs and weren’t pushy in trying to sell “extras”. They expanded out some spots and created custom footbeds. Fit checked, etc. I skied the next two days in the boots in blissful comfort, with no hot spots or need for adjustments. I can’t stress enough how great the service and the people were.
